Getting a good night's sleep is important when you're spending time outdoors. You need comfort and insulation from the cold ground. If you're not getting enough quality sleep, you're going to feel sluggish the next day. When I'm out guiding, I need my sleep. In my arsenal of outdoor gear there are seven sleeping pads between the two of us. Gear overload? Probably, but I pick out my gear according to my planned activities and I always have extra gear for friends who don't have their own yet.

Thermarest pads

If I'm Car Camping, meaning I'm walking no more than 50' from my car to pitch my tent, I'll bring my Thermarest CampRest sleeping pad. At 25" wide and 2" thick it is really comfortable to sleep on but it weighs in at over 4 lbs, way too heavy and bulky to use for backpacking. For overnight trips I pack my Guidelight (discontinued model) that is much lighter but still comfortable. Adding the Trekker Chair Kit means I always have a nice camp chair for relaxing at the end of a long hike. The other sleeping pads I own are a Ridge Rest foam pad I use as extra insulation when snow camping and an ultralight Ether-Thermo 6 pad from Pacific Outdoors. My bases are covered for any adventure I can dream up!
