When I told the League of American Bicyclists National Bike Summit
that "Cyclists are important users of America's transportation
systems," I meant it. And, when I wrote that "With DOT, bicyclists have a full partner in working toward livable communities," I meant that as well. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood wrote in a post on his blog yesterday. (Earth Day dummie!) How cool is that? The Secretary of Transportation recognizing that riding a bike is transportation!!?? And actually holding fast to it to boot.
Apparently he's in for the long haul, and is willing to spend the big bucks (like 1 billion of em) on improving our streets, especially ones in urban areas. He went on further to say that his department is really pushing this program, requiring states to spend 3 percent of their share of the booty NOW.
As I said today in testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, this includes fostering communities where bicyclists feel both safe and welcome on the roadways.
It would seem that the SECTRANS has a good head on his shoulders and it's encouraging to see his opinions leaning in a very rational and often green direction. Only time will tell whether this whole "go green" thing is a fad. I do so hope not. But tonight as I watched Thursday night on NBC (excellent), I must've sat through 300 "go green" commercials. They must still be the hang over from yesterday.
Earth Day is today, but we'll need the sustained engagement of bicycle commuters and their advocates in the weeks and months to come to help keep the wheels of bicycle-friendly legislation on the road.
He's got a good point there. And a challenge. We as freedom lovin, backyard bbqin, bicycle ridin Americans need to let our city know we're here. The easiest way to do that is to just be present! Be a biker even when you're not on your bike. Be nice and be smart. Let your fellow motorists know that you're equal out there. The best thing we can do is just keep our tires to the pavement.
And smile.
Enjoy Your Ride, Grizz
