Ahh yes, the fixie. Defenitly in a league all of its own. Defenitly seeds out
the strong from the weak, yet its always fun to watch a beginner try to stop a
fixie with all leg strength!

| There's something about Fixed Gears... |

![]() Anyone who's been riding bikes a while has a definite feeling about fixed gears. So obviously, I want to hear yours. Personally, I've been riding bikes as my preferred method of transportation for three years now. About two years ago, I got tired of getting parking tickets. So, I got rid of my car. But as I began riding more, I realized my bicycle was no longer going to cut it. How I loved it though. Her name was Lady Lightning. I loved her until while riding home one day on 7th street (busy), she bucked me to the street in the middle of traffic. A well placed *** hole had managed to untrue my front wheel enough so that it locked up my brake and sent me over the handle bars. So, I got to thinking... "I'll just take off the brake. I don't really NEED the front one do i?" Now, I had no real mechanical skill at this point so, one thing led to another and I almost didn't have a bike anymore. A concerned friend (roommate) clued me in on the COO-OO-OOLEST thing to ever happen to long beach. The fixed Gear Bicycle. Now, at this point, I had no knowledge of Squid, New York, Monster Track, NACCC, San Francisco, Mash, or any of the other super cool things that I was far too uncool to have heard about yet. All I had was a little bit of money to spend on something to replace my car (69 Dodge Dart, also missed). Being willing to spend 1000 bucks, I headed on down to my good old friendly neighborhood LBS. When I walked out, (or rather about a week later when my wheels arrived) I had a new best friend. I named him Beetlejuice and he's still killing the pavement today. Nowadays, I love riding every type of bike and I can't wait to acquire more. After all that, I arrive at my question. Why is everyone so annoyingly militaristically childishly for or against the Fixed Gear (trend, scene, movement, whatever you want to call it)? Roadies wear funny clothes and ride expensive bikes and want to be Lance Armstrong, Fixie kids wear tight pants and ride bikes they don't know much about and give sour looks to people who don't get it, MTBers wear baggy clothes and drive their trucks to the trailhead. Whatever!!!! Honestly, who cares? Everyone who rides a bike is my friend. Together we're taking back our roadways and environment. Let's not scoff at "noobs", let's embrace them and teach them. After all, one more fixie out there means there's one less SUV out there. Enjoy your ride. -Grizz Add your Comment:Powered by !JoomlaComment 3.26 3.26 Copyright (C) 2008 Compojoom.com / Copyright (C) 2007 Alain Georgette / Copyright (C) 2006 Frantisek Hliva.
